Egypt's Hosni Mubarak resigned power as Egypt's president today, and leaves with a reported fortune of anytwhere between $40-70 billion. Here are some other world leaders who have a healthy nest egg socked away for their retirement:
1. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Thailand
$30 billion
The longest-serving monarch, 82-year-old King Bhumibol Adulyadej is also the richest. His wealth includes vast land holdings, including some 3,500 acres in Bangkok. The Thai government has disputed his position as the wealthiest head of state, saying that much of this is not part of his personal wealth.
2. Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei
$20 billion
Brunei's oil and gas reserves have kept the Sultan among the world's richest, and he spends accordingly: as well as having a love for luxury cars, for his 50th birthday in 1996 he hired Michael Jackson to perform. Court papers revealed that he paid $2 million to his badminton coach, and $2 million pounds for acupuncture and massage. And two housekeepers were each paid around $11 million.
3. Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (President of UAE)
$18 billion
President of the UAE and hereditary ruler of its capital emirate, Abu Dhabi. UAE is home to one-tenth of world's oil reserves; petrodollars-dollars are the president's family's original source of wealth. Sheikh Khalifa spent more than $1 billion - including $200 million on a Frank Gehry- designed Guggenheim museum - on branding Abu Dhabi as a cultural center.
4. King Abdullah bin Abul Aziz of Saudi Arabia
$21 billion
Saudi Arabia's vast oil reserves are behind the wealth of King Abdullah. Supports the $27 billion King Abdullah Economic City, a massive 20-year development started in 2006 and named for him.
5. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai
$12 billion
State-owned Dubai World owns DP World Ltd., the third-largest international port operator; Istithmar World, a private equity firm that acquired Barney's New York in 2007 and Nakheel PJSC, builder of palm-shaped islands in the Persian Gulf.
6. Hosni Mubarak
$10 billion
President Hosni Mubarak has a personal fortune of $10 billion, and his family fortune is estimated at between $40-70 billion. Wealth is spread across several accounts and properties in the United States, Switzerland, Britain, and Germany.
7. Silvio Berlusconi
$9 billion
Started out singing on cruise ships. Eventually built fortune through Fininvest, which now has interests in media, life insurance, movie production and soccer team A.C. Milan. His many critics charge that he has used his political career to maximize that wealth.
8. Hans-Adam II, Prince of Liechtenstein
$3.5 billion
The fortune of Liechtenstein's monarch comes from the royal family's ownership of the country's LGT Bank. He owns an estimated 50,000 acres of land in Austria and several 17th-century palaces as well as a 400-year old art collection.
9. Emir of Qatar
$2 billion
The head of a country with the world's third largest natural gas reserves, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani's expensive tastes include horse and camel racing. Passionate about art, inaugurated I.M. Pei-designed Museum of Islamic Art.
10. Asif Ali Zardari, President of Pakistan
$1.9 billion
Nicknamed "Mr 10 per cent" thanks to the corruption allegations that have dogged him, Benazir Bhutto's widower is accused by the National Accountability Bureau of holding $1.5bn in assets abroad, including 14 multi-million dollar mansions in the United States.
