Manchester City fans mob former owner Thaksin Shinawatra at Manchester United game Manchester City fans mobbed former club owner Thaksin Shinawatra as he watched the Barclays Premier League match against Manchester United among the faithful. The Thai businessman, and former Prime Minister of Thailand, bought City for £82million in the summer of 2007. He appointed Sven-Goran Eriksson as coach, and sanctioned a number of expensive signings he hoped would propel City towards silverware. But City failed to win trophies under Shinawatra and the Thai sold the club to Sheik Mansour of Abu Dhabi for a reported £200m little more than 12 months after buying it. Shinawatra was subsequently found guilty of corruption in Thailand, and was sentenced to two years in prison. But still City fans asked him for photographs and autographs at the match against Manchester United that may ultimately have decided the 2011-2012 Barclays Premier League title race. City fans still hold Shinawatra in regard as he was the man who first turned around the fortunes of the then-underperforming club. | |
