Thailand had a glimpse of democracy when the country was still called Siam after the revolution of 1932 that changed political system from absolute monarchy to a constitutional one. That was a seed of ideas for democracy sprouted among young military officers of the Roar Sor 130 (1912) Rebels.
But the taste of democratic rule never went far. It was almost completely contained by the result of a coup d ’etat in 1957. The country was under military dictatorship of Field Marshall Sarit Thanarat and his lieutenant demagogues, in association with the return to full-fledged monarchy for 26 years before the student uprising of 1973 happened.
Still, Thailand could not achieve democracy in reality amid plunged in political and human tragedies when a thousand of students were maimed and killed inside Thammasat University campus.
It was only for the sake of preserving the monarchic presumptuousness.
Political rights in Thailand were confined and disguised thereafter. Democracy was in the state of anesthesia through the incident of Black May in 1992 which ended with the come–out-of-closet by whom a real culprit behind dictating power against democracy was.
Democratic rights eroded further when agovernment with overwhelmed electoral majority was overthrown by another military coup under an auspice of the head of Thai privy’s council, with approval of the king.
Emergence of the Red Shirts against coupd ’etat culminated by the consecutively elective administrations dismantled by hidden hands of power witnessed the cry for revival of democracy.
Practices of double standard in justice process and uses of extra judicial power vested in some constitutional organizations make the so-called Thai style constitutional monarchy no longerrelevance.
A viable passage to humanitarian prosperity for Thai peoples can only be striving for a genuine democracy.
