Lèse Majesté, the Monarchy and the Military in Thailand

http://www.thairedsweden.com/

Giles Ji Ungpakorn is a Thai-British scholar and political activist. He worked as an Associate Professor of Politics at Bangkok’s prestigious Chulalongkorn University from 1996-2009. In January 2009 he was charged with Lèse majesté*, resulting in his exile to Britain. The charge arose from his book “A Coup for the Rich”, which criticised the 2006 military coup.

In a candid commentary on Thai democracy, on April 29th, Giles Ji Ungpakorn will discuss the controversial relationship between the Military and Monarchy, in combination with Thailand’s Lese Majeste law, as obstacles to Thai democracy. Elin Bjarnegård from Uppsala University’s Department of Government and Eva Hansson from Stockholm University’s Department of Political Science will join Giles in discussing the status of and obstacles to Thai democracy.

We invite you all to join us for an event full of unique and personal insights into the inner workings of Thai democracy within the overall framework of human rights and democratic development.
